Larches are the odd ones out among conifers: every autumn their needles turn gold and fall. Up on the alpine slopes east of the Coast Mountains, a few weeks in late September is all it takes for a whole hillside to change colour.
Notes from a wet trail
Rain on the North Shore again. Moss on everything, cedar smell after the shower, and the creek louder than it has been all summer. A good day to walk slowly and write things down.
Why keep field notes
Small observations add up. The first frost, the week the maples turn, which trail floods each spring. This site is a quiet place to keep them.
